Household Gadgets

Keep your devices in check! Here are a few tips to manage your home electronics’ energy usage.

  • Unplug your most wasteful “vampire” devices when you’re not using them.
  • Investigate your gadgets for signs that they are “vampire” electronics. These devices can account for a whole month’s bill each year.
  • Look for these clues:
  • Controlled by a remote control
  • Plugged into an external power supply (like power adapters and chargers)
  • LED light that stays on when device is off
  • Consumer electronics account for 15% of household energy use.
  • Plug electronics into a power strip. Flip the switch on the strip off when you are not using them or to shut down multiple devices at once.
  • Always look to buy ENERGY STAR®-labeled electronic devices.
  • Screen savers don’t save energy. The best way to reduce your computer’s energy use is to turn it off when you’re not there.
  • If you’re leaving your computer for a longer period of time, put it in sleep mode or turn it off . An average American household can cut 60% of the energy their electronics use by using the sleep mode*.
  • Use the power saver setting, when possible, on laptops.
